Board certified, Rex Hamilton is an Ophthalmologist who specializes in premium cataract surgery as well as refractive surgery. While he has performed over 12,000 cataract and refractive surgery, he is the first for many different procedures. Being the first to perform the SMILE (Small incision lenticule extraction), AKA Flapless Lasik, you will also find that he was the first for Extended Depth of Focus Lens Implantation.

In 2003, he was the first surgeon to perform a custom wavefront guided Lasik Los Angeles at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute. Because of his hard work, in 2016 he was voted one of 300 premier surgeons for refractive cataract surgery in the USA by Ocular Surgery News. From 2003, to 2018, Dr. Hamilton has served as the clinical professor and director at the UCLA laser refractive center.

Education

Dr. Hamilton’s reputation is supported fully through his credentials. Having spent several years educating, himself he has worked hard to receive his Master of science for Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. From the University of California, the Irvine College of Medicine to be exact, is where Hamilton received is medical Doctorate. His medical internship took place at the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California. He then obtained residency at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, department of ophthalmology, Stein Institute.

With extensive education, and amazing history of surgeries and procedures, Dr. Hamilton M.D is truly one of the best in his field. Because of his technical background, he has become well known as a physician-scientist, while becoming a common name in the academic community due to his expertise in corneal biomechanics, cataract surgery, and corneal imaging. Author to 40 peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. More than 50 scientific presentations for national meetings. Also, he has delivered countless lectures internationally. Since 2013, Hamilton and colleagues have produced four articles teaching their finer points in a field of emerging technologies that aid in refractive and cataract surgery.

SMILE

As stated previously, he was the first to perform the SMILE procedure. What is SMILE you may ask?  It’s a procedure that uses a femtosecond laser. Creating a small incision inside the intact cornea. The incision made is actually smaller than the Lasik flap. The shape of the cornea will be altered, correcting nearsightedness, then it is left to heal within a few days with no stitches and quick results. Without creating a corneal flap as you would with LASIK style surgery, SMILE still produces the same visual acuity according to research.

Dr. Rex Hamilton MD is a well accredited, and a fully capable Doctor for many different procedures involving cataract surgery as well as corneal imaging and biomechanics. Extensive schooling and residency have given him the experience and skill to perform SMILE procedures successfully throughout his career. While he maintains his status as a well-known physician-scientist. A pioneer in many surgical procedures throughout his career, he has become a leader in laser vision correction.
