Are you concerned about eye bags under your eyes? The presence of eye bags can impact how you feel about your looks and cause others to make supposition about the way you feel. When the space under our eyes are saggy or puffy, it gives us an older and more tired look. In this article, we aim to help you understand the different Eye Bag Treatment  options that can help improve your appearance, and return you to your younger look.

About surgical procedure

According to Dr Heng of The Ogee Clinic in Singapore, the surgical method of eye bag removal is also known as blepharoplasty. When an eye or plastic surgeon performs a blepharoplasty, their focus is to treat the excess under-eye tissue, which causes eye bags. A common blepharoplasty surgery will consist of the following stages:

Anesthesia – A surgeon can carry out an eye bag procedure under general or local anaesthesia.

Incision – Your surgeon will make an incision, just below the lower eyelashes or in the inside of the lower eyelid. They will remove excess fat and skin tissue.

Ending process – The surgeon will use stitches to close the incision. If they use stitches, the patient will need to have them removed within a few days of the operation.

Recovery – The recovery period is between 2-4 weeks. Main symptoms experienced are bruising and swelling. As these subside, the new appearance of the eyes will become more obvious. Generally most patients are satisfied with the results.

Know the non-surgical eye bag removal process

Some people may think that surgery is the only way for eye bag removal, but that cannot be further from the truth. According to Dr Heng, there are actually plenty of other options available, and some of which are less invasive than others. If you’re seeking non-surgical options to reduce eye bags, then you want to talk to a cosmetic medicine doctor or aesthetics doctor about the following procedures:

Microneedling: This method uses a process called collagen induction therapy to reduce the appearance of eye bags. It stimulates the body’s cells to form more collagen and elastin that are proteins to make the skin smooth and tight.

Laser treatment: In this, they use heat-producing lasers to stimulate skin cell renewal. The concentrated beams of light remove the outer layer of skin then it becomes firmer and smoother. Nowadays, there are even lasers (e.g. Fotona SMOOTH laser) that can be applied on the mucosal surface of the eyelids to tighten them from the inside, and this process helps reduce the heaviness of the eye bags, says Dr Heng.

Injectable fillers: This is a very popular method and is also known as tear trough or under-eye fillers. During the procedure, the doctor can inject the filler under and around the eye bags to camouflage them and smoothen the transition from the inferior eyelid to the cheek. This method doesn’t require anesthesia and causes minimal pain. It also has minimal downtime. According to Dr Heng, because of advantages of minimal downtime, convenience of procedure and fast results, his clinic do see more people opting for non-surgical methods of eye bag removal.

Schedule a consultation with your doctor

To determine the best treatment for you, it is best to have a detailed discussion with your doctor. Having a consultation with your aesthetics doctor can help you decide if a surgical or non-surgical treatment is the better option. Your choice of procedure should depend on whether you want a permanent solution, your risk for scarring, whether you can afford social downtime, and other preferences. Your nurse or doctor are the people in the best position to assess and advise.
