Alcohol Detoxification: How Long Does it Take

Quitting substance drinking after regular or heavy use can lead to withdrawal symptoms. Common alcohol withdrawal symptoms include sweating, insomnia, and an upset stomach. Detoxification programs help people comfortably and safely withdraw from alcohol addiction in a more comfortable setting.

Making the decision to quit alcohol drinking can change a person’s life, especially if they struggle with addiction or abuse. The bad news is, the disadvantage of stopping is the possibility of developing withdrawal symptoms. A person who regularly drinks substances or a heavy drinker is most likely to experience some withdrawal manifestations.

These things can range from mild to severe and can even lead to individuals returning to their old habits in an attempt to stop these symptoms. While detoxifying your body from alcohol can be challenging, it does not have to be experienced alone.

Treatment facilities help people effectively and safely withdraw from alcohol, as well as providing 24 hours a day, seven days a week support. It can improve the chances of completing the program and maximize the patient’s chances to go on to formal residential treatment. It makes the patient’s long-term sobriety possible.

Check out this site for more information about detoxification.

Alcohol withdrawal

When an individual regularly drinks alcohol or a heavy drinker for a long time, they will most likely go through withdrawal symptoms when they quit consuming the substance. These symptoms can be both mental and physical and can range from very mild to pretty severe, even deadly in rare cases. It happens because the body is dependent on liquor.

When a person consumes the substance on a regular basis, the brain and body become used to having it in the system. Since the substance is a depressant, our brain has to work double-time to keep our body functioning properly with the substance in the system. It puts our body in a different-than-normal state to deal with the consumption of the substance. When it is removed instantly, the body remains in that state, and the person will experience various manifestations.

Symptoms

Quitting after regular alcohol consumption for an extended period can cause our body’s nervous system to remain in the different-than-usual state mentioned above. The longer an individual consumes and abuses alcohol, the more likely they will encounter these symptoms. Listed below are some signs of substance withdrawal:

  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Vomiting
  • Tremors or shaky hands
  • Anxiety
  • Sweating
  • Insomnia
  • Increased blood pressure and heart rate
  • Upset stomach

In severe cases, an individual can experience DTs or Delirium Tremens. These manifestations may start around two to three days after the person’s last consumption and can be pretty dangerous, even deadly in some cases. An estimated 4% to 5% of regular or heavy drinkers will experience Delirium Tremens.

Manifestations of Delirium Tremens include:

  • Seizures
  • Confusion
  • Excessive sweating
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Increased in heart rate and body temperature

Experiencing this symptom can be life-threatening if it is taken for granted or not treated the right way. If individuals are experiencing Delirium Tremens, ask the help of medical professionals or websites focusing on this type of treatment like get strong immediately.

Timeline

People will experience substance withdrawal differently. But most individuals will go through detoxification in a general timeline. The severity of dependence on this kind of addictive substances, as well as the number of times patients have abused it, will influence the severity of symptoms they will experience. The timeline is as follows:

After six hours of last consumption, people may start to experience some withdrawal signs. Common manifestations at this point include increased heart and blood-pressure rate, headache, anxiety, and sweating.

After 12 to 48 hours of last consumption, patients will continue to experience some minor signs. A person with a serious dependence on this substance may experience seizures at this time.

After three days of last consumption, individuals will experience severe manifestations of withdrawal. They may also start to experience delirium tremens two to three days after their last drink. While in rare cases, patients can continue to have signs for up to a month after their last drink.

A lot of patients will have a cessation in signs one to two weeks after the last drink. But everyone has different experiences, and there are personal factors that can affect the complexity and severity of the manifestation, as well as the amount of time it will take to complete the detoxification process.
