Patients must remain calm during the dental procedure. Otherwise, it can create problems for both patients and dentists. If you are living in San Jose, you can easily reach out to specialized dentists, which include anesthesiologists and dentists who are experts in sedation dentistry. If you are someone who feels anxious during a dental procedure, mild sedation can work for you. You will remain awake while the procedure is going on, but you will not feel any pain.

For a more extensive and complex dental procedure, you can seek deep sedation. In the case of anesthesia, you will remain asleep throughout the procedure, and you will not be able to remember anything once the procedure is done.

Anesthesia is only given by trained professionals in the field. For more options, sedation dentistry of San Jose can prove to be highly beneficial for you. They both provide comfort to patients during dental procedures but in different ways.

How do sedation dentistry and General anesthesia differ?

sedation dentistry

Level of safety provided by the procedures

Sedation dentistry: While the dentist treats the patient, a trained person checks the patient’s vitals. It includes heart rate, blood pressure, etc. Recovery does not take long. However, you might need someone to take you home as the sedation can take some time to wear off.

General Anesthesia: As compared to sedation dentistry, the recovery time can be longer. Moreover, you might have to wait for a long time as there is high demand for anesthesiologists in San Jose.

Consciousness maintained by patients

Sedation dentistry: As a patient, you will be able to respond to the dentist’s commands and will remain awake throughout the dental procedure. However, you might or might not recall the entire procedure.

General anesthesia: it is the total opposite of general anesthesia. The person will be unconscious throughout the procedure. Moreover, you will not be able to respond to the dentist, and you will not recall the dental procedure.

Complexity involved in the procedure:

Sedation dentistry: It is generally used for less complex dental procedures. Moreover, patients who do not have intense anxiety can have sedation, and those who prefer less invasive options. The complexity is not as great as you would find it in general anesthesia.

General anesthesia: When there is a more complex dental procedure or dental surgery, that is when people use general anesthesia. Moreover, if a patient has a severe phobia of dental procedures, that is when they can be given anesthesia.

Cost considerations in both procedures

Sedation dentistry: They are usually less expensive than general anesthesia. Less monitoring is required, and fewer resources are available. If you are looking for a budget-friendly option, consider sedation dentistry.

General anesthesia: There are highly specialized instruments used in general anesthesia, and therefore, they cost much more. Moreover, the recovery process is longer and more comprehensive, which is also why it costs more. When sedation does not prove to be effective, that is when you want to consider going for general anesthesia.

Difference in anxiety level

Sedation dentistry: here, the anxiety is mild and not as severe as in dental procedures where general anesthesia is used. Those patients who prefer to remain conscious during the procedure and yet remain calm can go for sedation.

General anesthesia: When the person experiences a dental phobia of a severe kind you can go for general anesthesia. The person is put to sleep during the procedure and remains unconscious until the procedure is done.

Choosing the best option!

As per the needs of the patients, the dentist will recommend the best option for the specific patient. Moreover, you can explain your concerns to the dentist, and it will help the dentist provide you with the right choice. San Jose has many skilled dentists who are highly trained in the field and can provide you with the best option.
